This research paper examines the techniques that should be taught in the common introductory subjects in the basic educational system of Chiba University of Commerce. First, it argues that the basic skills for learning have been replaced with more specific skills such as reading, thinking, writing, and peer learning, and that teaching these skills at universities is the original role of universities. Second, for reading, thinking, and writing, it should consist of three stages: Step 1 to lower the hurdles to learning techniques, Step 2 to teach the basic technique patterns, and Step 3 to establish the technique patterns. Thirdly, when setting up common introductory courses, it is desirable to prepare in advance ‘common guidelines to support learning’ for each technique, and to simultaneously operate them throughout the university as step 3.
