Improving students’ learner autonomy in Japanese educational settings

Sakai discussed as follows: The objective for teaching English in Japanese schools had been heading towards developing students' practical communication abilities, so, learners were encouraged to take the ownership of many processes. However, developing autonomy in English classes still seemed not easy in Japan. Sakai, after investigating 721 students from 16 universities, concluded that the key factor was the use of meta-cognitive strategy. Other speakers were Y. Kiyota and A. Takagi.
